Pilot light goes out
All gas-burning heating systems have a pilot light. While the pilot light on most modern systems ignites electronically there may be an occasion when the system fails to light, or in the case of a power outage, the system does not light automatically. Homeowners, will either need to manually light the pilot light, or they may need to call their HVAC maintenance provider. If you choose to manually light the pilot light, carefully follow the instructions provided by the furnace manufacturer.
Mold in the vents
With our wet weather, a common Seattle HVAC problem is mold in our vents. High humidity can cause mold to grow in and around the vents of your heating and cooling system. One way to prevent this is to have your vents cleaned regularly, but you should also have your HVAC maintenance professional inspect your system’s drain line backup. If the problem persists, installing a dehumidifier in your home can help.
Uneven heating and cooling
If some of the rooms in your house are warmer than others, you have a problem with uneven heating. This is more common in older homes that have not been retrofitted with more modern HVAC systems that use zoned temperature controls. Common reasons for uneven heating are:
- the HVAC size is inadequate for the area you’re trying to heat
- inadequate number or placement of vents
- poor insulation
An HVAC service professional can help you determine the cause of your home’s uneven heating so that you can fix the issue.
Inefficient heating or cooling
There are many reasons why your HVAC system may be running inefficiently and causing your heating costs to be high. The most common reasons for inefficiencies are:
- dirty or clogged air filters
- poor ductwork
- leaking or uninsulated ducts
- broken fan inside the unit
- debris blocking the outside of the unit
